About Us
The mission of the transition centers is to:

...Offer positive life-changing opportunities for parolees and probationers in life skills, substance abuse recovery, education, and occupational assessment and training in a residential campus environment. Long term solutions will be sought for each individual, taking a holistic approach utilizing available resources, family participation, and positive peer support.

The Transition Center is designed to provide a wide variety of services to include but not limited to: educational, vocational, life skills, parenting, counseling, substance abuse for residents. The residents voluntarily agree to abide by both parole conditions and special conditions (transition center rules). The center is staffed and operational 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The residents are provided housing, meals, and laundry services. There is a nurse on staff for day-to-day health issues; otherwise, healthcare is the responsibility of the resident.

The Thomasville Center is located on what was originally an Air Force radar base (see photo at left).  After the base closed, the Alabama Board of Mental Health and Mental Retardation established a residential care facility here, which operated until 2004.

Education
Education services will be provided by the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. Residents are assessed and a curriculum is tailored to fit their specific needs. Coursework options include adult basic education, GED preparation and testing, college prep and/or remediation, computer skills, and job readiness. Students interested in gaining technical skills can take proposed courses in construction trades, welding, commercial foods, or Focused Industry Training. Each student receives between 20 and 30 hours of instruction weekly, for a total of 600+ hours.

Supervision
Residents are assigned a parole officer upon arrival at the center. The officer supervises the resident and enforces parole conditions and center rules.
Parole officers provide a safe
and secure environment to:
• Protect the Public
• Protect Staff
• Protect Property
• Protect Residents assigned to the Center
Parole officers are sworn law enforcement officers and assist local county, city, and state agencies as needed.

Treatment
Treatment services are provided by a Mental Health contracted agency, West Alabama Mental Health. Services provided will include substance abuse, counseling, parenting, anger management, and mental health. Treatment services are offered in both group and one-on-one sessions. Counselors are assigned in  living areas to provide easy access for residents. West Alabama offers an 11 week extended intensive substance abuse treatment program for targeted residents or for those that have been board ordered to complete.
